Recently an interesting and entertaining evening workshop was delivered by Tony McMaster, a great friend of DPS, at his Barby Moorings studios.

With DPS’s planned competition ‘Reflections’ coming later in the season, Tony demonstrated some surprisingly effective, yet simple tabletop photography techniques.

Needless to say, he didn’t overload us with too much science. As always, he presented his workshop with humour, clear explanation and a relaxed manner. By ensuring every step was understood by all, regardless of photographic experience, everyone was clearly benefitting from the session, and we were encouraged to get involved. He also showed the importance of experimenting with different camera and flash settings, and how moving the position of the lighting can dramatically affect the outcome of the image

Tony cunningly improvised with the use of items that can be readily found at home or acquired cheaply. This injected a lot of fun into the evening. He even used a wilted, shrivelled flower and a gnarled, crumbling log (that looked like it belonged on a fire).

Both proved effective, if not photogenic, photo props. An oven tray filled with 2 inches of water was soon convincingly transformed into a pond with ripples on the water (and not forgetting the ripples of laughter that ensued when Tony blew through a drinking straw as the shutter fired). Who would have thought of that!!!

In the 2nd half of the evening, after he and his wife had generously provided refreshments, Tony gave us the chance to try some shots for ourselves whilst coaching those who dared to take the plunge and have a go with their own camera equipment.

A massive thank you again to Tony who not only presented an inspiring and fun event, but reminded us that creativity only requires patience, imagination and a desire to experiment. Quality results can also be achieved on a minimal budget and without highly specialised photography gear!
