a Kodak Instamatic, which used the now-defunct 126 cartridge-type films.\u00a0 It seems a long time ago and I presume it must have been a Christmas present!\u00a0 In those days I just used to take a few holiday snaps.\u00a0 <\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><i>I then moved on to a Zenith SLR when I was at Durham University.\u00a0 (How many people had one of those as their first \u201cproper\u201d camera?) \u00a0<strong>(Editor: Yes, I put my hand up to that and I still have it!)<\/strong> I&#8217;d joined the Industrial Archaeology Group and we used to roam the north east of England looking at derelict lime kilns, lead mines, abandoned railways and much more.\u00a0 It had to be photographed!<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><strong><i>What type of photographs do you most enjoy taking?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><i>Landscapes, buildings, industrial archaeology, anything steam-powered or transport-related, stuff I come across when out and about.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><strong><i>What type of photographic equipment do you use?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><i>These days I&#8217;m not keen on lugging around loads of heavy equipment (the weight of my old film SLR kit amazes me!) so I use a Panasonic Lumix G2 4\/3 format camera with a selection of lenses.\u00a0 Probably the lens I use most often is a 7-14mm zoom (equivalent to 14-28mm).\u00a0 I also have a Lumix TZ80 compact camera which I&#8217;ll take if I want something to just slip in a pocket.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><strong><i>Can you identify some photographers that have inspired you?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><i>One of my favourite photographers is Joe Cornish.\u00a0 He takes wonderful landscapes and his use of lighting is often breathtaking.\u00a0 Back in the days when Dunchurch Photographic Society used to host an annual Celebrity Lecture in Rugby School&#8217;s Macready Theatre he was one of the photographers we had as a guest speaker and he put on a great show.\u00a0 Couldn&#8217;t afford him these days!\u00a0 <\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><strong><i>Can you show us a selection of your photographs each with a short explanatory paragraph; the famous Crowns Section at Botallack.\u00a0 The mine workings here went over half a mile out under the sea.\u00a0 I had a cottage a mere 5 minute walk from this location and was fortunate to get two or three good sunsets whilst down there.\u00a0 A wide angle shot to include plenty of thrift in the foreground.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><i>Barmouth Snow Squall<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Barmouth-Snow-Squall-by-Ian-Andrew.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4244\" src=\"https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Barmouth-Snow-Squall-by-Ian-Andrew-600x357.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"347\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Barmouth-Snow-Squall-by-Ian-Andrew-600x357.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Barmouth-Snow-Squall-by-Ian-Andrew-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Barmouth-Snow-Squall-by-Ian-Andrew-768x456.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Barmouth-Snow-Squall-by-Ian-Andrew-500x297.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Barmouth-Snow-Squall-by-Ian-Andrew.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><i>This was taken during the weekend of the \u201cMini Beast from the East\u201d and was a dead-lucky piece of timing.\u00a0 We knew a train was due (there aren&#8217;t many use that line on a Sunday) and had watched for around 10-15 minutes as it slowly approached round the bay &#8211; with the sun shining.\u00a0 Then a snow storm appeared, coming down the valley behind the bridge&#8230;\u00a0 5 seconds before taking this picture the train was within shot and the sun was still out but there wasn&#8217;t much snow falling in the image.\u00a0 Then &#8211; BINGO! train, bridge, snow and sun all together.\u00a0 15 seconds after this exposure the train had gone, the sun had gone and the bridge had very nearly gone as a white-out swept in.\u00a0 Another 10 minutes later the sun was out again.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><i>So far as processing goes there were dozens of buoys and seagulls to be cloned out, leaving just a single pair of orange buoys in a strategic place.\u00a0 The snow and sunlight are real though! <\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><strong><i>How do you see your photography developing in the future?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-3388313538955502429gmail-Quotations\"><em>I still do all my post-processing in Lightroom and have done since I \u201cwent digital\u201d in 2006, but it now seems increasingly difficult to achieve a successful image without doing significant jiggery-pokery in Photoshop.\u00a0 I may have to take the plunge!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thank you, Ian, for sharing this with us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Great atmosphere in these landscapes, all taken in exactly the right light and weather conditions.
