and Burning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>How to be an Artful Dodger \u00a0<\/strong><em>(Author: Eric Tatham)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you want to use a <em><strong>Brush<\/strong><\/em> to selectively darken or lighten part of your image you can of course use Photoshop\u2019s built-in <em><strong>Dodge<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Burn<\/strong><\/em> tools.<\/p>\n<p>The <em><strong>Dodge<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0tool lightens the brushed area and the <em><strong>Burn<\/strong><\/em> tool darkens.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"219\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Right-click on the tool icon to select the one you want.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with these tools is that you cannot conveniently modify any changes you have made other than by using <em><strong>Undo<\/strong><\/em> in the <em><strong>Edit<\/strong><\/em> menu.<\/p>\n<p>But there is a non-destructive way of <em><strong>Dodging<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Burning<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an image of Princes Street in Edinburgh for us to work on.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1810\" height=\"1153\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say, for example, we want to lighten the buildings at the end of the street.<\/p>\n<p>I usually start by making a copy of the layer.<\/p>\n<p>Select the layer and press <em><strong>cmd-J<\/strong> <\/em>on a Mac (<em><strong>Ctl-J<\/strong><\/em> on Windows) to make a copy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"353\" height=\"718\" need to make our <em><strong>Dodge<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Burn<\/strong><\/em> layer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"383\" height=\"616\" class=\"wp-image-4136\" key on a Mac (<em><strong>Option<\/strong><\/em> key on Windows) and while it\u2019s held click on the <em><strong>Create a New Layer<\/strong><\/em> icon.<\/p>\n<p>A dialogue (ie settings box) will appear.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"791\" height=\"623\" class=\"wp-image-4137\" <em><strong>Name<\/strong><\/em> to<strong><em> Dodge and Burn<\/em><\/strong>, the blending\u00a0<em><strong>Mode<\/strong><\/em> to <em>Overlay<\/em> and tick the box to set the layer to <em><strong>50% grey<\/strong><\/em>. Click <em><strong>OK<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"498\" height=\"304\" class=\"wp-image-4138\" creates a layer that is 50% grey and <em><strong>Overlay<\/strong><\/em> mode means that it blends with the layers below such that any pixels in the image are completely unaffected where the overlay layer is 50% grey.<\/p>\n<p>If the overlay layer pixels are lighter than 50%, the underlying image will be lightened and where the layer pixels are darker than 50% the underlying image will be darkened.<\/p>\n<p>Set the foreground colour to White or Black depending on whether you want to lighten or darken and set the background to the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>You can then easily switch between White and Black by pressing the<em> \u2018<b>X<\/b>\u2019<\/em> on your keyboard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"81\" height=\"278\" class=\"wp-image-4139\" src=\"https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/word-image-19.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>So, to lighten the buildings, make sure the foreground colour is set to White, select the <em><strong>Brush Tool<\/strong> <\/em>and adjust its <em><strong>Size<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Hardness<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I usually set <em><strong>Hardness<\/strong><\/em> to <em><strong>0%<\/strong><\/em> when dodging and burning to give as soft an edge as possible.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"302\" height=\"392\" class=\"wp-image-4140\" set the <em><strong>Brush Opacity<\/strong><\/em> to a low value according to how much lightening or darkening you want to produce.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"309\" the Grey layer selected, paint over the buildings with your White brush.<\/p>\n<p>Use a Black brush to darken again if required.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1514\" https:\/\/dunchurchps.com\/dps-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/word-image-20-500x282.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1514px) 100vw, 1514px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As well as adjusting the <em><strong>Opacity<\/strong><\/em> of the <em><strong>Brush<\/strong><\/em>, you may find is easier to control the amount of dodging and burning by adjusting the <em><strong>Brush Flow<\/strong><\/em>, especially if you have a pressure-sensitive graphics tablet.<\/p>\n<p>In effect, <em><b>Opacity<\/b><\/em> limits the amount of \u2018paint\u2019 applied and this applies no matter how many times you paint over an area.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, with <em><strong>Flow<\/strong><\/em>, every time you paint over an area more \u2018paint\u2019 is applied and it becomes more
