12th January 2022 Meeting – Fifty Shades Of Bray Part 2

On Wednesday 12th January 2022, Dunchurch Photographic Society experienced the Fifty Shades Of Bray Challenge, in it’s second year of existence. The evening built on the success of last season’s YouTube broadcast, where members of the Society had been invited to make their own interpretation of a RAW landscape image supplied by the Chairman (David Bray). After making their own edit, the images were critiqued in a light hearted way, whilst learning a little bit more about processing techniques and composition.

In this most recent instance of the challenge, members were given the opportunity to talk through the various different edits of this year’s image and we were treated to some very clever and different interpretations on the theme.

Later in the evening, David Bray gave a recorded Lightroom demonstration about how he went about making a simple edit using that software to join in the series of images that members had submitted.

It was a thought provoking evening where there was plenty of discussion about ‘traps’ in image (dust spots/mist spots on lenses), image composition, cropping arrangements and various different types of processing software that members had been in a position to use.

David Bray identified that his favourite overall edit of the Cornish Landscape that was used as the basis for the challenge. This was a very different night time interpretation submitted by Ken Monk. It featured a sky swap, and some neat work in creating reflected detail of the stars and the aurora borealis in the water. Well done Ken!!

The Chairman would like to thank all of the members who supplied their images for this friendly event. Who knows… we might just run another one next season.
