Two Battles, Two Very Different Outcomes

It’s been a busy and slightly puzzling week for Dunchurch Photographic Society, with two inter-club battles taking place in quick succession – and producing very different results.

Away Battle
Northampton vs. Dunchurch

The first of the two took place on Monday evening with an away match against Northampton Camera Club. Despite putting forward a strong selection of images, the evening proved to be a tough one for Dunchurch. Northampton delivered an excellent set of photographs and, when the scores were finally tallied, they secured a convincing win with 346 points to our 328. While the margin was clear, there were still plenty of well-received images and useful feedback from the judge for us to take away.

Home Battle
Dunchurch Vs. Lutterworth

Last night, however, the story was rather different as we welcomed Lutterworth Photographic Society for a home battle. This proved to be a much closer contest from the outset. After the prints section had been judged, the two clubs were perfectly level on 174 points each, setting up a tense and exciting projected image round.

As the projected section progressed, the scores remained tight, with both clubs producing strong work. In the end, Dunchurch managed to edge ahead by the narrowest of margins, finishing the evening with a four-point lead to take the win.

One of the most curious aspects of the week is just how different the scoring was between the two battles. We used exactly the same set of images in both competitions, yet the overall totals – and indeed the outcomes – varied significantly. It’s a reminder of one of the enduring quirks of club photography competitions: judging is always subjective, and different judges can respond very differently to the same images.

All in all, it’s been an eventful week for the society – a heavy defeat followed quickly by a closely fought victory. Congratulations to all members whose images were selected, and thank you to both Northampton Camera Club and Lutterworth Photographic Society for two enjoyable evenings of photography.
