DPS Meeting 17 – The Art of Food Photography with Liz Peat
Last night’s meeting marked our first gathering of 2026 and the 17th meeting of the season, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring way to start the new year.
We were delighted to welcome Liz Peat, a former member of Dunchurch Photographic Society, who gave a fascinating talk on the art of food photography. Liz explained that her own interest in food photography was sparked back in 2019, after attending a talk by another speaker here at DPS — a lovely reminder of how influential our programme of speakers can be.
Liz shared a wealth of practical advice throughout the evening, emphasising that while lighting, composition and styling are important, it is ultimately the photographer’s role to add emotion to an image. Her examples showed how thoughtful choices can turn a simple dish into a compelling photograph that tells a story and draws the viewer in.
The second half of the evening was given over to a hands-on practical session, which proved extremely popular. Liz had brought along six different food photography setups, allowing members to rotate around the room and put her guidance into practice. It was a great opportunity to experiment, ask questions and see how small changes can make a big difference.
The only disappointment of the evening? We didn’t get to eat the food at the end!
A huge thank you to Liz for stepping in at the last minute and delivering such a thought-provoking, educational and enjoyable evening. It was a fantastic start to 2026 and very much appreciated by everyone who attended.
What a lovely write up Simon – looks like a very useful and engaging evening for the members. Bravo.
