A Night in Low Light with David J Bray

Last night’s meeting of the Dunchurch Photographic Society was one to remember, as our very own David J Bray — also known as Freddie Kruger — took us on a fascinating journey into one of his favourite subjects: low light photography.

David’s talk traced the evolution of his passion for capturing the world after dark, from his earliest experimental shots (that first sparked his love of the genre) through to his most recent, truly breathtaking work. Along the way, we were treated to a stunning array of images — from atmospheric steam engines shrouded in mist, to aircraft glinting in the twilight, and even snow-capped mountains illuminated by the northern lights. Each image was a testament to the patience, skill, and creativity that low light photography demands.

In a thought-provoking, thoroughly enjoyable and dare I say ‘Enlightening’ presentation, David not only shared his artistic journey but also his practical approach. He broke down his camera settings and shooting techniques, and — to the audience’s delight — showed his ‘straight out of camera’ images alongside the final edited masterpieces. Seeing the transformation process brought real insight into how technical understanding and creative vision come together in post-production.

As an added bonus, David also shed light on the fascinating world of international photography competitions. He explained how entries are submitted, what judges look for, and how he’s achieved such remarkable success on the global stage — inspiring many of us to consider entering our own work in the future.

A big thank you to David for a captivating and informative session — and for sharing not just his images, but his passion for the art of photography.

Many thanks for the very positive write-up for the evening. It was a pleasure to engage with the members on this theme and I am hopeful that, after seeing how easy it is (!!), that they are inspired to try more work of this type to help expand their portfolios.
