Last night, more than twenty members of the Dunchurch Photographic Society enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Barby Moorings Studio, where we were warmly welcomed by our longtime friend of the club, Tony McMaster.
Tony treated us to a fascinating and highly practical demonstration of Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) — a creative photographic technique that uses deliberate motion during exposure to produce impressionistic, painterly images. Throughout the evening, Tony shared not only his technical know-how but also his artistic insight into how to approach ICM with purpose and confidence.
In his trademark clear and friendly style, Tony guided us through each step of the process, from camera setup and shutter speed selection to composition and creative experimentation. His easy-to-follow explanations and relaxed teaching manner made even the most complex ideas feel approachable.
After a well-earned tea break, the second half of the evening was handed over to our members, who had the opportunity to put their newfound knowledge into practice. Cameras in hand, everyone eagerly experimented with the techniques Tony had demonstrated, producing a wide variety of abstract and creative images. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm and imagination on display — a true testament to Tony’s inspiring teaching.
For those who want to continue learning from Tony, he runs the popular YouTube channel “Camera Club Live” (@CameraClubLive), where he releases a new tutorial every Wednesday. His videos cover a wide range of photographic techniques, presented in the same engaging and informative style that we enjoyed in person.
A big thank-you to Tony for hosting us and sharing his expertise once again. It was an inspiring evening filled with creativity, learning, and plenty of laughter — exactly what photography should be about. Thanks also to David Bray for supplying the photos for this post.
We look forward to seeing how our members develop their ICM images in the weeks ahead!
Lovely report from a very engaging and inspiring evening in the Barby studio with Tony. A great experience, especially for newer members who have never been to the venue or seen Tony in action before.
