Our second meeting of the new season was a real treat! We had the pleasure of spending the evening with David Bray, who many of you will know as the man behind all those brilliant video sequences we enjoy at awards nights. This time, he was giving us a peek into the fascinating world of Audio Visual (AV) sequences.

David made the whole subject feel really accessible. He talked us through the basics of choosing images that work well together, and how the right piece of music can completely change the feel of a sequence. It was great to see how much thought goes into making pictures and sound complement each other.

He also explained the two main types of AVs:

  • Harmony – where the music and images blend together to create a mood or feeling.

  • Documentary – where images are paired with narration to tell a story or share information.

David even gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the software he uses, Pictures2EXE. He showed how timelines, transitions, and effects can all be used to polish up a sequence. It was fascinating to see how it all comes together.

Before wrapping up, he also mentioned some of the awards and distinctions out there for AV work — definitely food for thought for anyone who gets hooked on making their own.

All in all, it was a fun, inspiring evening, and hopefully it’s given some of us the nudge to have a go at putting together our own AVs. Don’t forget, there’ll be a chance later in the year to share your creations with the club — so get experimenting!

Thanks for the write-up Simon. I am humbled by some of the comments provided on the evening and following it. I really do hope people take the opportunity to ‘have a go,’ with whatever software they decide to try.
